ICU Summer Balls over the years seem to have become plagued by uncertainty and massive problems. Last year’s ball was declared officially off, however it still managed to emerge kicking and screaming because of a donation by the college to fill the £20k black hole.
This year Sen Ganesh, ICU president, has finally managed to get College to commit another donation to the ball fund to ensure the event goes ahead. Live! has however learnt that despite a number of cost cutting measures, the summer ball committee are still worried about making a projected loss. An insider at the union told Live! “Income from ticket sales has been budgeted much lower than ever before, because of another big event occurring in the same week.”
Live! was informed by a union hack in the last 24 hours that the event the insider was referring to is in fact the Medic Ball which is organised by ICSMSU. The medic event, which will be held at an undisclosed IC sports ground, has in fact been scheduled for the night before the planned ICU Summer Ball.
A member of the ICU Summer Ball committee declined to comment on the matter, however there has been an angry reaction from students who believe that ICSMSU have deliberately done this so that medical students will only go to their ball, since it is now first in the calendar on the same weekend.
This news will only help to extend the already wide rift of medics verses other IC students, which have developed following the issues over the Reynolds Bar earlier this term. It seems that miscommunication has once again lead to the uncertainty over whether this year’s ICU Summer Ball will happen, despite the apparent creation of a “Communications” working group by the ICU President earlier in the year to combat these types of problems. One union hack even commented: “You'd have thought that with Nona and Tom's love-affair, ICU and Medics could have got the dates right.”
