The caption to the photo, the 5th of a set, draws attention to the Guilds regalia that Bo’ Driver, James Devine, City and Guilds Union President, Shrenik Patel and Co-Driver, Simon Hamlin, are wearing. Guilds regalia was originally only permitted to be worn by certain members of the executive and those travelling in Bo’ however recently a clause has been added which allows, at the President’s discretion, other people to wear it on special occasions.
Bo’ has been taking part in the London to Brighton run since 1929 and in 1934 he was bought by City and Guilds College Union from a fairground in Battersea for £40 and is run and maintained by students. In 2001 he took Imperial College Rector, Sir Richard Sykes down to Brighton and in 2002 Sir Noel Davies, Chairman of Ricardo and ex-Bo Driver, was one of his passengers. This year, Principal of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor John Perkins, was invited to follow in the steps of Sir Richard and Sir Noel, however he was unable to attend.
