As previously reported, following months of speculation, Live! has taken on the onerous task of establishing a name for Imperial College Union?s long serving, and pretty unappreciated, goldfish.
For the past week Live! readers have proposed a range of options for potential goldfish names, ranging from the eccentric to the simply bizarre. The Live! judges have cogitated mightily upon these and selected five of the best across the whole range to be put to you, our readers, for the final decision.
The nominees are?
Nemo
Well, obviously. Everyone?s favourite colourful fish was always going to be an option. The judges particularly liked the slightly geeky connotations of naming a goldfish after a computer-generated image.
SOLE
The SOLE system, the much-loved successor to the disastrous on-line LEQs, is surely a worthy namesake for ICU?s goldfish. Only at Imperial College could a simple on-line questionnaire take three years to (almost) perfect, amidst failure and controversy, when an old paper-based system worked perfectly well.
Sykes
Sir Richard Sykes, a former Chief Executive of Glaxo, took over as Imperial?s Rector in January 2001 and embarked on a number of initiatives, some more popular than others. While the Rector has many supporters amongst the student body on some issues, Live! is sure there are quite a few students who would like to see ?Sykes? flopping around under water?
Geekfish
No poll to name something at Imperial College would be complete without a reference to our slightly geeky reputation (of course, completely undeserved). ?Nuff said, really?
Michelle
And finally? Imperial College Union?s Office Manager and longest-serving employee Michelle Lewthwaite recently departed the slightly smog-filled realms of South Kensington for a life beside the seaside. Having worked in the Union office for 14 years, presumably (though we can not be sure) mostly in harmony with her marine co-workers, this seemed to be the very smallest tribute we could offer.
