This finally comes after speculations that an Imperial College ball might be supplanted by a University of London wide ball and many private concerns, with the lack of any organisation in progress, that there would be no ball this year. After announcing they are considering the use of Alexandra Palace as a venue, the Union has finally set in stone a date and venue for the event.
Mike Moate, Deputy President for Finance and Services, who will be organising the ball, seemed to be cautiously optimistic about the event, saying "Ally Pally is a fantastic venue and to have a formal banquet type dinner will be excellent. There's still a lot to sort out but hopefully we'll go through all of that without too many problems and have a wonderful event."
Tickets to the ball are expected to cost in the region of £60-65 including transport by coach to and from the venue, a sit-down formal meal and a drinks reception. Mr Moate confirmed that the Union will be seeking sponsorship for the event and also said that College have indicated they may underwrite the event provided the Union put forward a sensible business plan for it. The break-even point will be set at 1000 people, a target Mr Moate was confident could be attained. "I think people will want to go", he predicted.
The ball will be held in the West Hall of Alexandra Palace and entertainments proposed include DJs, live bands, an after dinner speaker and a casino.
