Tanaka Building Opens for Business

Although the new college entrance has been open for some weeks, the rest of the new development has been closed to students; but today marks the start of teaching in the Tanaka Business School.
The reception of the new Tanaka Business School.

Having been a building site for the last year, students have seen the Tanaka Business School and new college entrance start out as £25m and now, finally, they are both open. The college entrance opened several weeks ago, although college did not give a notice out regarding this fact, only those who come the South Kensington direction would have noticed. However, the large empty space which is the college foyer has already been used for a recent ICU Choir rehearsal and also there are possible plans to use it for more musical events in the future, given that the acoustic is fairly reasonable. Live! has learned that one of the people in charge of the building were happy to hear the foyer being used, as they “didn't quite know what to do with it”.

Whilst the entrance has been open, the rest of the development, namely the Tanaka Business School, has remained closed as final preparations are done. Today marks the opening of the building for academic purposes, and many other events have be scheduled according to the official website. This reporter has noticed that the site's computer generated images of the building show that a few final adjustments/additions are required, however these should be completed by today's opening. There is, however, no evidence of the large flatscreens or stands that appear in the foyer where the choir was located. Time will surely tell the final layout of the building. A highlight of the building is that the main circular tube contains lecture theatres on all levels, sparking a distant change from the usual style which students are accustomed to.

The official opening of the building will take place on Thursday 24th June, when Her Majesty The Queen will perform the ceremony.

Foyer looks to me like a brilliant place for a site specific improvisational drama piece! :-D

I look forward to the revised setting of '2,000 lost Freshers' on 4th Oct.

Has anyone been inside the new lecture theatres? They are inside the giant metal cylinder. They are really dark and gloomy. I suppose that is what happens when you don't have any natural light...

It's a glorified greenhouse. It is going to be absolutely sweltering in there during the summer - mark my words.

As for that giant metal 'thing' - what the hell is that meant to be???

You people are so easily impressed.

It's quite obviously (and appropriately) a tin for the bean-counters.

Actually technically that cylinder thing is known in the trade as a 6-storey 'drum'. And it's as hollow as the stuff they're going to be teaching in it. Or maybe it's just a big roll of wire:

Seriously - I'm guessing now that (from a design point of view) there is no way that the entrance can be ventilated properly during the summer (unless they can open some windows I haven't seen). The temperature in there is going to top 40 degrees. You heard it here first.

If you look at it, I think about half of the glass wall on the left (facing Mech Eng) is a series of windows that can open to ventilate the foyer. Whether they'll be enough is, of course, another matter...

Fair enough -

well there certainly is very poor heating in the Tanaka building- it was freezing when they first opened it...

It's the college main entrance, apparently.

For some reason it isn't a college exit - there's signs all over the doors on the walkway saying no through route to exhi road.
