Shots were fired at a music event at Loughborough Students Union at around 0245 on Sunday morning, following the release of CS gas inside the venue during a live performance by US band Pretty Ricky.
A 22-year-old steward, who was a student at the university, was shot in the abdomen in a scuffle at what the BBC are describing as a "public live music event". His injuries are not life-threatening.
Along with the steward, six other people were taken to hospital, including a 26-year-old woman who was punched in the face. A fight broke out following the release of CS gas, with students in accommodation around the venue hearing shots being fired.
A 22-year-old man from Nottinghamshire, who is not a student at Loughborough, has been arrested.
